Is Imitation really flattery? And how should artists take imitation?
Copying designs and ideas being stolen is not too far from common in any creative space. I’m sure you’re aware of a creative who’s had their work or ideas copied by other creatives or even worse, one of the bigger companies.
Even our content ideas and page aesthetic have been copied but that’s a conversation for another day
My question is, should you take your ideas being copied as a compliment or as an offence?
I don’t think I’ve ever been more split on an opinion because there is no denying that you’re doing something right for someone to take your work and copy it but on the other hand, seeing someone disrespect and often not even acknowledge you for taking inspiration from your work can be so demoralising, especially when you can’t do anything about it. The big companies cough cough Boohoo and Co etc are way too big for small creatives' voices to be heard. It’s sad seeing them helpless after the situation dies down and they don’t get rewarded for their work.
I’ve seen many designers take it as a compliment and have seen others not take it as well. Both are valid. My question to you is, what do you think?
