Miriam Mijoda started making hats toward the end of her undergraduate in Fashion Design in 2020, initially as a hobby. Before moving to London for her MA in 2022, she had already built a strong archive of work. The first years were largely experimental, exploring different techniques and materials while participating in internships and workshops to deepen her knowledge and skills in hat making.
The Rain Fetcher Hats are part of her graduate collection, Daughters of Rain, set in a speculative, fictional future where freshwater resources are scarce, and every drop of water is valued. In this world, rain becomes a precious and vital source of freshwater. The aesthetic and concept of Daughters of Rain are inspired by Laysisters, their solidarity, collective heroism, and acts of charity during times of crisis. The collection also draws from Frank Herbert’s Dune, a novel set in a future defined by water scarcity and the ingenuity required to survive it.
